At Froehling Anderson, our robust internship program the last 35+ years is designed to do exactly those things. With offices in Minneapolis and St. Cloud, Minnesota, we partner with universities across the state to connect with students who are eager to start and build their careers in accounting. Through real client work, supportive mentorship, and exposure to a variety of industries, our interns gain meaningful experience that helps them transition from the classroom to the professional world.

Connecting with Future CPAs Across Minnesota

Many of our interns learn about Froehling Anderson through their peers, career fairs, accounting clubs, and faculty recommendations. Building relationships with students early in their academic journey allows us to introduce them to the opportunities we have available at our firm; communicate what sets us apart; and vision cast what their future in public accounting could look like.

Current busy season intern, Amran, shared that her first introduction to our firm happened through a couple of campus connections: “I met Froehling Anderson at a career fair called ‘Meet the Firms’ as well as in Mankato’s accounting club, Beta Alpha Psi.”

Another current intern, Abby, shared: “I heard about Froehling Anderson through the accounting club at Concordia St. Paul University as well as from my accounting professor.”

Building these on-campus relationships are important to us. They allow us to meet motivated students who are curious about careers in accounting and eager to learn more about working at a public accounting firm that serves the Twin Cities, surrounding areas, and Central Minnesota.

Hands-On Accounting Experience from Day One

Our interns quickly move beyond observation. They gain hands-on experience working alongside our tax, audit, and advisory teams on real client projects.

Depending on the engagement and service line, interns may assist with:

  • Preparing tax returns
  • Supporting audit procedures
  • Reviewing financial documentation
  • Participating in client meetings
  • Learning how accounting teams collaborate during busy season

For many students, this is their first opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world client work. Amran shared her excitement about gaining that practical experience: “I was most looking forward to getting hands-on experience, completing tax returns, audits, meeting clients, and immersing myself in the firm culture.”

Interning during busy season is an eye-opening learning experience for students exploring careers in public accounting. Paige was especially eager to experience this firsthand, especially after her two other internships with us outside of tax busy season: “I was most looking forward to getting to experience busy season for the first time.”

This hands-on exposure helps interns better understand the rhythm of public accounting and the collaborative effort it takes to serve our clients effectively.

Learning from Experienced CPAs and Mentors

An important part of any successful internship is mentorship, and at Froehling Anderson, our interns work closely with professionals at every level of the firm, from staff accountants to partners.

Interns quickly discover that learning happens not just through formal training but also through everyday collaboration and guidance from team members who are eager to pass down their knowledge. For Amran, this is one of the main reasons she chose our firm to do her accounting internship at: “The company representatives spoke highly of the work culture and how helpful coworkers are with teaching.”

Our professionals understand that today’s interns are tomorrow’s CPAs. By investing time in mentoring and supporting them, we help students build both their technical accounting knowledge and professional confidence.

A Culture That Makes Interns Feel Welcome

While technical experience is important, we have discovered that workplace culture is often what makes an internship memorable. Our interns become part of our team, where their voices are heard, their knowledge matters, and their critical thinking skills are valued. Former interns have consistently mentioned that Froehling Anderson’s culture was one of the main reasons they were interested in our accounting internship program.

As one of our current interns, Paige, has shared: “I was drawn to the firm’s culture of fun.”

Our inclusive and supportive work environment is just one reason many interns return for additional internships or choose to start their full-time careers with us. In fact, Paige’s experiences turned into a long-term opportunity: “I originally heard about Froehling Anderson through family. Now, this is my third accounting internship, and I have recently accepted a full-time position as a staff accountant starting January 2027.”

Stories like this reflect our goal of building lasting relationships with talented students who are eager about their future in accounting.

Exposure to Multiple Industries and Service Areas

One of the advantages of interning at a mid-sized CPA firm is the breadth of experience interns receive.

Our firm serves a wide range of clients across industries, including:

  • Manufacturing
  • Professional services
  • Nonprofit
  • Construction
  • Distribution
  • High-net-worth individuals
  • Professional athletes

Interns will also experience working in both tax and audit rotations. Current intern, Abby, specifically highlighted this opportunity when explaining why they were drawn to the firm: “One of the reasons I was drawn to Froehling Anderson was because of their general services department (GSD), which would allow me to gain experience in both tax and audit work.”

Our General Services Department allows interns to explore different aspects of public accounting and better understand where their interests may lie as they continue their careers.

At Froehling Anderson, our goal is to create an accounting internship experience that helps our interns build skills, confidence, and relationships that will benefit them beyond the internship; we want to provide them with skills to be successful throughout their accounting careers.
