Derek Schmale

Derek was looking for a career path where he could join an advisory team, be a valuable asset, and contribute to the success of clients. With his skills in problem solving and communication, he wanted to be someone who came alongside his clients in their challenges and successes as well as contribute knowledge and value to their complex situations. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a doctorate in law, he made the decision to pursue a career in the accounting industry.

After two years of being a staff accountant at a large Real Estate Investment Trust company, he decided to go the path of public accounting after law school and joined the team at Froehling Anderson in 2024. He spends most of his time in tax controversy; estate and trust tax planning and compliance; solving complex 1040s and estate returns; assisting with tax planning; and engaging in tax compliance for pass-through entities in real estate. Derek doesn’t shy away from a challenge; he sees them as something to smoothly guide clients through while simultaneously living vicariously through their successes.

When he’s recharging away from the office, Derek enjoys golfing, landscaping, and attending any sporting event his son is in.
